Lake Superior 3.0 Lake Trout
Lake Trout
Achieve and maintain genetically diverse self-sustaining populations of lake trout that are similar to those found in the lake prior to 1940, with lean lake trout being the dominant form in nearshore waters, siscowet lake trout being the dominant form in offshore waters, and humper lake trout being a common form in eastern waters and around Isle Royale.
Lake Superior continues to maintain the original suite of lake trout forms (lean, siscowet, humper, and redfin) in expected locations across the lake. Populations of lake trout remain robust, with adult abundance and recruitment stable suggesting that lake trout may be at or near carrying capacity. Within Lake Superior, lean lake trout continue to be the dominant form in nearshore waters (<80m) with siscowets being the dominant form in offshore waters (>80m). Siscowet lake trout continue to serve as a keystone predator that provides offshore-nearshore and benthic-pelagic trophic linkages. Humper and redfin lake trout forms continue to persist in the offshore eastern waters of Lake Superior and around Isle Royale, as they have historically.
